Congratulations to Alethea Marie Robinson, whose submission was selected as the mural to be commissioned for the wall at the Route 123 entrance to Occoquan. The town received a variety of excellent submissions, and the three finalists in particular made the Town Council's decision quite difficult.
To paraphrase Ms. Robinson's own words, the mural seeks to tell the story of Occoquan in three parts -- the historic town, its beautiful surrounding landscape, and the people that live, work and play within it. "The town provides a backdrop to the activities around it, specifically boating and kayaking, with nature alongside. Across the entire scene we have 'Occoquan' in large white lettering with a hint of its reflection in the river below. The color scheme is cohesive and serene. The major characters -- the fox, kayakers, blue heron, boats, and turtles all carry you in a circle around the mural, creating a fun movement through the design."
We're grateful to all those who participated in the mural contest and hope to continue to work with such wonderful local artists as we expand public art spaces in the town. In the meantime, please join me in congratulating and thanking Ms. Robinson.
