Snakehead Roundup

The Town of Occoquan, Virginia will permit fishing exclusively for northern snakehead fish in River Mill Park on Sunday, August 3 between the hours of 8:00pm-11:00pm.
In this pilot event, licensed fishers will be encouraged to catch and kill the invasive northern snakehead species from the River Mill Park area of town. Town staff and police will provide on-site monitoring to ensure compliance with all rules, public safety, and park integrity.

To ensure ethical, safe, and ecologically responsible practices, the following rules will be enforced:

Fishing license required. All participants must possess a valid Virginia state fishing license.

Catch & Kill Only: All northern snakeheads caught must be humanely killed and may not be released.

No spearfishing: Spearfishing is prohibited from the park.

Leave no trace: All anglers must remove their own trash and fish remains. A designated waste station will be available for disposal.
