PRESS RELEASE: March 20, 2026

The Town of Occoquan is calling anglers of all ages—the shad are coming! Try your hand at fishing in the Occoquan River during the 2026 Occoquan Shad Run on Saturday, April 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This event offers a unique opportunity for licensed anglers to cast a line at River Mill Park, whether from designated riverbank areas, the footbridge, or by launching a kayak or boat to fish directly from the water.

"In the past, the annual migration of Shad in the spring has played a significant role in Occoquan's social history," according to Mayor Earnie Porta. "A popular spring gathering in the early part of the 20th century, in fact, centered around a shad bake held in the ruins of the old Cotton Mill where River Mill Park is today. In addition to recognizing that tradition, we're trying to create occasional opportunities for anglers to access parts of the shoreline that are not always available."

During the annual shad run, the Occoquan River is populated primarily by hickory shad rather than the larger American shad. Although American shad are less commonly encountered and known for their size, they are currently designated as a species of greatest conservation need. As a result, a statewide moratorium is in place, and any American shad caught must be released.

A valid Virginia fishing license is required to participate. Anglers must also register with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission Fisherman Identification Program (free of charge), as shad are classified as a saltwater species, even when caught in freshwater.
