shad run
Saturday, April 11, 2026
Calling anglers of all ages—the shad are coming! Try your hand at fishing in the Occoquan River during the 2026 Occoquan Shad Run on Saturday, April 11 from 9am-12pm. You are invited to cast a line along River Mill Park, fish from the riverbanks (in approved areas), from the footbridge, or launch a kayak or boat and fish right from the water!
Of course, you’ll need a Virginia fishing license. In addition, you must also register with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission’s (VMRC) Fisherman Identification Program—it’s free!—since you’re fishing for a saltwater fish in freshwater.
